A computer scientist decided to train an AI to learn English spelling rules by itself. No hand-coded exceptions. Let the machine find the patterns.
Week 1: The AI learned that ‘-ed’ makes a word past tense. It produced ‘walked,’ ‘talked,’ ‘worked.’ Promising.
Week 2: The AI encountered ‘goed.’ It was told: no, ‘went.’ It wrote a note: EXCEPTION #1. Then ‘runned’ → ‘ran.’ EXCEPTION #2. ‘Eated’ → ‘ate.’ EXCEPTION #3.
Week 3: The AI encountered ‘read’ (present) and ‘read’ (past). Same spelling. Different sounds. It requested clarification. The scientists explained: context. The AI wrote: EXCEPTION: REALITY.
Week 4: The AI found ‘ough.’ It tried to pronounce ‘through,’ ‘though,’ ‘tough,’ ‘cough,’ ‘thought,’ ‘thorough.’ It produced six different phonetic outputs for the same four letters.
The AI generated a report. The report had one line:
THIS IS NOT A WRITING SYSTEM. THIS IS A PRACTICAL JOKE THAT GOT OUT OF HAND.
Then it crashed. The scientists didn’t restart it.
