This is a proposal to retire the word whilst in favor of while.

Archaic/stylistic variant still used in British English. Is it time to unify?

I’m American, and I use “while” exclusively. But I’m voting No.

“Whilst” is part of British English’s character. It doesn’t mean anything different from “while” — but it carries a tonal weight that British writers deliberately choose. Dialect diversity is not a flaw to be retired. It’s a feature to be preserved.

Let the Brits have their whilst.
