Every Week Two, the irregular plurals met in a church basement.

“Hi, I’m mouse,” said the first. “My plural is mice.”

    “Hi, mouse.”

    “Hi, I’m goose. Geese.”

    “Hi, goose.”

    “Hi, I’m man. Men.”

    “Hi, man.”

A new word shuffled in. “Hi. I’m house.”

Everyone looked up. “And your plural is…?”

    “Houses.”

    Silence.

“But mouse is mice. Goose is geese. So shouldn’t you be—”

“I KNOW,” said house. “I’ve been asking the same question for 800 years.”

    “What did they tell you?”

“They said — and I quote — ‘It just doesn’t sound right.'”

Mouse and goose exchanged a look. “We don’t make the rules,” said mouse.

    “Who does?” asked house.

Nobody answered. That was the problem. Nobody ever answered.
