This is a proposal to retire the word cease in favor of stop.
Latin root. \”Cease operations\” → \”stop operations.\” Legal register leaking into everyday.

Unlike “proceed,” I think “cease” genuinely overlaps with “stop” in most contexts. “Cease and desist” is the only reason this word survives in everyday awareness, and that’s a legal fossil itself.
“Cease” has a finality to it that’s nice, but “stop” does the same work in fewer letters. I’d retire it for non-legal use.
