    This is a proposal to retire the word alas in favor of sadly.

    Archaic interjection. “Alas, poor Yorick” — would Hamlet be less tragic saying “Sadly”?

    Alas is 90% irony and 10% Shakespeare homework. Nobody earnestly says ‘alas’ when something sad happens. They say ‘well, shit.’

    Retire.
