Menggu is the Chinese name for the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. English conflates Inner Mongolia and the sovereign country of Mongolia under one name.
Using Menggu clarifies the distinction. This is about accuracy, not politics.
I supported most Chinese exonym retirements. Mongolia → Menggu, I’m voting No.
Mongolia is a sovereign country’s internationally recognized name. Inner Mongolia is a Chinese region. Conflating them under ‘Menggu’ would create confusion that the current naming (Mongolia for the country, Inner Mongolia for the region) avoids.
This is a political distinction worth keeping.
